Alexa's reason to hope

Alexa was well on her way to becoming a world champion triathlete when a horror cycling accident threatened to end her sporting hopes and dreams.

The sickening crash left her with life-threatening injuries and major brain damage. She spent more than 111 days in hospital and 3 months in rehab, fighting for her life.

But in Para-swimming Alexa found a reason to hope and keep going. Within three years of her accident, she won gold at the Paralympic Games in Paris.

Para-swimming gave me back my drive and passion. It gave me a purpose."

- Alexa

Paralympics Australia supports people like Alexa throughout their sporting journey

Winning a Paralympic medal takes talent, determination and hard work. It also depends on getting the right support, at the right time. That’s why Paralympics Australia is there to support our Para-athletes, every step of the way.
Your donation today can help people with disabilities reach their sporting potential.

Paralympics Australia plays a vital role in the development of Para-athletes like Alexa.

It starts with supporting their first taste of Para-sport. It continues with creating opportunities for athletes to access the highest standard of classification at the relevant point in their sporting pathway.

It then involves connecting them with training and development opportunities and giving them the financial and practical support that they need to get to the Games.

“Without Paralympics Australia, Alexa wouldn’t have a future and our family wouldn’t have the life we have.” Russ, Alexa’s dad, says.

Help give Para-athletes like Alexa a reason to hope and dream

The turning point in Alexa’s recovery journey came when she first got into the pool after her accident. What began as a rehab activity, quickly snowballed into something much bigger.

“I got out of the pool one day and said to Mum and Dad, ‘I want to go the Paralympics,’” Alexa says.

Russ says he was so proud to see Alexa back doing what she loved best and refusing to give up.

“For the first time since her accident, we had hope. She still had a chance to fulfil her dreams and pursue something she was passionate about.”

Your support for Para-sport today can give families like Alexa’s a reason to hope and a reason to keep going.
