Become a champion of change

Sport has a special place in the hearts of Australians. But for the 20% of Australians living with disability, the opportunity to participate in sport can feel like a distant dream. Barriers such as high costs, the need for specialist equipment and lack of accessible sporting clubs can leave many aspiring Para-athletes sitting on the sidelines – you have the power to change this. You can help our Para-athletes turn their sporting dreams into Paralympic realities. Be a part of the team that’s making our sporting system more accessible and creating a more inclusive society for all.

Curtis McGrath is one of Australia’s leading Paralympians. After winning gold in Para-canoe at the 2016 Games in Rio, he went on to become the first person to ever win two gold medals in the event during Tokyo 2020. But there was a time when Curtis thought his sporting days were over.

In 2012, Curtis faced the horrors of war. He stepped on an improvised explosive device while serving with the Australian Army in Afghanistan, and incident that would forever alter his life. In the dark times that followed, Para-sport became a lifeline and a source of hope.

Paralympics Australia is there every step of the way to provide the support Para-athletes need to reach their sporting potential, as Curtis explains.

“Paralympics Australia has been a big part of my journey. They were there to support me through the Paralympics Qualifiers back in 2015. They helped me connect with a great coach, and the Paralympic Equipment Fund Allowed me to get the adaption I needed to my boat to be able to compete. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support I’ve had from Paralympics Australia."

With a generous monthly gift, you can help open doors into Paralympic sport for more Australians like Curtis who are living with disability.
