Like many Aussie kids, representing Australia was a childhood dream for Chris Bond. But in 2005, Chris’s dream of pulling on the green and gold looked shattered. He was 19, had just finished year 12 when his whole world turned upside down.

Chris had contracted a severe bacterial infection and was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia.

Literally within a matter of hours, I was feeling sick in my stomach, seeing Doctors, before being rushed straight back to hospital, and sent into an unknown surgery. The Doctors told me I had a 50% chance of surviving this operation and I was told to say goodbye to my family.”

With his life on the line, doctors made the decision to amputate both his legs below the knee, his left wrist and all but one of his fingers on his right hand.

“I woke up a few days later after an induced coma, with a completely different body. Very quickly it become a reality: that this isn’t temporary, this is the rest of your life.”

It was a pretty dark time for Chris, until a chance meeting with the Australian wheelchair rugby coach, Brad Dubberley, opened a door and presented a new opportunity. It wasnt long beore his passion for sport and phenomenal talent helped pull Chris out of the darkness and towards becoming one of Australia's leading Paralympic athletes.

Your generous support today is vital to making Paralympic dreams come true.

Wheelchair rugby’s high performance program is one of two sports managed by Paralympics Australia. And our Australian Steelers wheelchair rugby team is one of the most successful teams in the world, winning two gold medals at the Paralympic Games (2012 and 2016) and world championships in 2014 and 2022.

A lot has changed for Chris since he first sat in a wheelchair rugby chair and experienced the full contact sport that used to be known as murderball. He has built a reputation for himself as a strong and passionate competitor and is now recognised as one of the best 3.5 wheelchair rugby players in the world.

“When I go an represent my country, I’m doing it for Australia but also my family who have seen me in my darkest times.

Our team is going for gold in Paris. Will you support Chris and the team on the road to Paralympic glory in Paris this year?

Help our Aussie Para-athletes compete and succeed at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games this August.

Did you know Paralympics Australia is a registered charity, reliant on generous individuals to help get the Australian Paralympic Team to the Paralympic Games?

Yet there is a common misconception that the revenue generated by the Australian Olympic Committee extends to Paralympics Australia. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Will you help make sure Aussie Paralympic heroes like Chris get the chance they deserve to compete and succeed at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games? Here’s how you can help.

$150 could help run a virtual school visit to help more students get involved in the Paralympic movement.

$6,000 could purchase equipment like a rugby wheelchair through our equipment fund to allow individuals to participate in the sports they love.

$15,000 could fund a classification training course allowing Australia to have more classifiers.

$80,000 would fund the cost to freight a horse to the Paralympic Games.
